    Mayor Daley on Friday cracked the door open to abandoning the costly fight to uphold Chicago's 1982 handgun freeze -- if he can fashion a replacement ordinance that protects the safety of first-responders.(Screw the citizens.)

    Until now, Daley had promised to defend Chicago's ordinance all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, despite what he called the dangerous precedent set by the court.

    On June 26, the Supreme Court overturned a Washington, D.C., handgun ban on grounds that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to possess a handgun in your home for self-defense.

    The National Rifle Association then filed lawsuits seeking to overturn handgun bans in Chicago, Morton Grove, Evanston and Oak Park.

    Wilmette and Morton Grove preemptively repealed their bans.

    Now that both suburbs have thrown in the towel, and newspaper editorials have urged Daley to do the same to save millions in legal costs on a fight he can't win, he appears to be having second thoughts.

    At a news conference called to tout the 6,848 guns collected at last week's gun turn-in program, Daley was asked point-blank whether he would continue the legal fight to keep Chicago's handgun ban.

    "We don't know yet. ... We're not gonna run away. We're gonna try to figure this out," he said.

    Under further questioning, the mayor said city attorneys would simultaneously contest the law and work on a possible replacement.

    Chicagoans with guns in their homes might be required to have insurance to protect taxpayers from frivolous lawsuits, he said.

    "We're talking about putting first-responders in a very, very delicate position of people being armed without being notified how many guns they have in their homes," Daley said. "We have to be able to fashion a law that truly protects first-responders and protects the citizens." (Check with America, Mr. Daley. It works OK there.)

    What an idiot. As if first responders know how many guns are in the homes of criminals when they're called once again to come out and see what they've done this time.

    That's not at all how I read it. If I was handed the article and told to give it a title, I would have said, "Daley to fight 2nd Amendment, crafts fallback plan."

    "Fold" indicates giving up. That's not what this says:

    You got that right. Insurance companies are not going to re-write policy's for this guy. Insurance companies will decide if they want to write an endorsement for this and then it must be approved by the department of insurance. Its already established in the conditions of the policy already. You have to establish negligence for liability. If you shoot a B.G. robbing your home, who's negligent. I'd say you'd be commended as now there not paying out on a theft loss for contents. Daley's a Mental Pygmy. I see all his opposition as costing the tax payers.

    When will folks like Daly learn that the law abiding citizen is the first responder! EMS, Fire, Police always come after the attack. The attackee is THE FIRST RESPONDER! They are the ones that should be assured of being able to defend themselves.

    I wonder if this might be a sneakier strategy than it seems. What happens if Daley drags this all the way to scotus (like he really cares about wasting tax dollars) and if things look unfavorable after orals, drop this "new" law in. Would that kill the scotus case and prevent incorporation, since the law being challanged would no longer exist, at least in the same wording as challanged?

    That's probably overthinking things but I wouldn't put it past the antis to try it

    It would be a requirement for liability insurance. The intent is to make it prohibitively expensive for someone to own a gun . . . ergo, most won't "qualify" to get a permit or own a gun.

    In a few states they actually proposed (never passed . . . yet) requiring something like $250K liability insurance PER GUN!!

    It's pure BS, but the intent is to deny people the right to possess by pricing them out of the market.

    Maybe not if you shoot someone on purpose, that would depend on what the policy says.

    Which taxpayers? It looks like he is implying the city can get sued because someone not employed by the city shot someone not employed by the city.

    I don't understand this comment.

    Is he trying to say the city might get sued because a first responder got shot and the city "did not do all it could to reduce the risk"?
