Baucus, tester Tell Holder to Stay Away from Guns

By Kellyn Brown , 03-03-09Further proof that renewing the assault-weapons ban isn't going to happen. Montana Sens. Max Baucus and Jon tester have sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder emphasizing that neither would support reinstating the gun law. Several of their Democratic colleagues, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, have also said they would oppose legislation reviving the 1994 ban.

The letter to Holder from Montana's U.S. senators:

    Dear Attorney General Holder:

This letter is in regards to your recent comments suggesting the reinstatement of the ban on assault weapons. We oppose reinstating the ban on the sale of assault weapons, and we call on the Department of Justice to enforce existing laws before it considers imposing any new restrictions on gun ownership.

Your comments noted increased violence among international drug traffickers as a reason to reexamine the ban on assault weapons within this country; however, this statement fails to acknowledge laws already in place that work to address this issue. Under current law, both transferring a firearm to someone knowing that it will be used to commit a violent or drug-trafficking crime as well as possessing a firearm in furtherance of a Federal drug trafficking crime are already federal felonies punishable by imprisonment.

We will strongly oppose any legislation that will infringe upon the rights of individual gun owners. We value our outdoor heritage, and a large part of that is our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Passing this heritage down from one generation to the next is a sacred part of being a Montanan, and something that we will always fight to protect. In the light of the Supreme Courtís landmark ruling of District of Columbia v. Heller, affirming the Second Amendment right to bear arms as an individual and constitutionally protected right, we urge you to avoid any legislative proposals that would jeopardize the Constitutional right of law-abiding Americans to own firearms.

    Sincerely,
    U.S. Senator Max Baucus
    U.S. Senator Jon tester

I don't understand why we have to keep dancing around the true reason for the 2A. Why keep linking the 2A to 'outdoor heritage' and not the fact that it was designed to protect our means of defense against people in Holder's position.

It seems that if you say it out loud, you are viewed as some kind of radical. Well, were the people who liberated this country radicals and in the face of a new tyranical government who will be called upon to defend it again?

Words dont mean anything to this administration. They have their own ideas and their own agendas and they could care less what anyone thinks.

The Dems are backing this "No AWB" because in 1994 they got evicted from office after the first one went through. They do not want a free repeater. I'll wager in 2010 it will be an entirely different story.

    Agreed TIW.

The 2A is _not_ about outdoor heritage and hunting.
It's about the most basic of human right to defend oneself, their family, their home, and their way of life...which includes hunting but is not specific to as much.

The 2A is as much about the tradition of hunting as the 1A is about the tradition of singing in the shower.

aside from the point of the 2A I still find it funny how these morons think that imposing more laws is going to stop a criminal (someone that does not follow laws in the first place) I mean they can impose laws til cows fly but a criminal is a criminal and its not going to change them.

Have you considered the larger picture that for many higher up in this movement, this has nothing to do with stopping criminals? The footsoldiers of the movement cry 'gun control' and 'stop the violence' while the elected 'representatives' sit back knowing the true adjenda.

    Exerpt:
Clinton continued, this time speaking more broadly than in reference to gun control alone. "[W]e're now in a position to begin again," he said. "It's not a leftward movement. It's a forward, communitarian movement." Communitarianism is a movement that considers individualism an impediment to society uniformly adopting values the movement considers appropriate, including authoritarian gun control. For example, the Communitarian Network platform states "there is little sense in gun registration. What we need to significantly enhance public safety is domestic disarmament of the kind that exists in practically all democracies."
Is this the utopian view that believes everyone decided to get along and evil left when Europe instituted strict gun bans? If Clinton believed there were no evil in the world if you banned weapons then why didn't he dismantle all nuclear weapons? Maybe Clinton rightfully believes that in order to ban 'individualism' (considered an impediment to society) and to adopt values the 'movement' considers appropriate, they would have to disarm the public? Who is 'the movement'? Who is 'society'?

    And for more on 'Communitarianism':

    Experpt:
Ultimately, however, only if we all accept more or our social responsibilities, will the moral, social, and political environment of the United States significantly improve. This is what communitarianism is all about.

Who has accomplished a simple act to protect the SECOND AMENDMENT ?

What simple act ? the simple contact of all your Senators and Representatives no matter party they belong too ! to ask them to do what the MONTANA Senators above have already done.
