Gun Owners of America
Tuesday, April 7, 2009
On Wednesday, April 8 the Virgina legislature will meet to see which of
Gov. Tim Kaine's vetos they will overrride.
The two bills that GOA is most concerned with are the following:
* SB 1035, by Sen. Hanger, would restore the ability of permit holders
to carry in restaurants that happen to serve alcohol, as long as the
permit holder does not drink. It should be noted that for many years
prior to 1995, there was no such ban in place -- and no problems arose.
Anti-gun restaurant owners would still have their private property
rights protected, as the bill allows for posting of signs if a
particular restaurant does not wish to allow concealed carry.
* SB 1528, by pro-gun champion Sen. Cuccinelli, would make it acceptable
for the training and/or safety requirements of Virginia's concealed
carry law to be made available online. Kaine claims that the bill would
lead to fraud as applicants get other people to take their tests for
them... except that there is no written test required! Current law
states that an applicant must only show his familiarity with firearms by
"completing" any one of several different types of "safety or training
course or class." Cuccinelli's bill would simply make it easier for
applicants to obtain those materials.
If you have not as yet contacted your state delegate and state senator
about these two bills, please take a moment to do so TODAY. Note that
since an override vote has to pass both chambers of the legislature in
order to be successful, it is imperative that you contact BOTH your
state senator and your state delegate.
If you have already contacted them previously, by all means, please do
so again.
ACTION: Please use the pre-written letter below to contact both your
state delegate and your state senator.

----- Pre-written letter -----
As a constituent and a law-abiding gun owner, I am writing to urge you
to override Gov. Kaine's veto of two important pro-gun bills that
recently passed the legislature.
SB 1035 (Hanger) would restore the ability of permit holders to carry in
restaurants that happen to serve alcohol, as long as the permit holder
does not drink. It should be noted that for many years prior to 1995,
there was no such ban in place -- and no problems arose. Anti-gun
restaurant owners would still have their private property rights
protected, as the bill allows for posting of signs if a particular
restaurant does not wish to allow concealed carry.
SB 1528 (Cuccinelli) would make it acceptable for the training and/or
safety requirements of Virginia's concealed carry law to be made
available online. Gov. Kaine claims that the bill would lead to fraud as
applicants get other people to take their tests for them... except that
there is no written test required! Current law states that an applicant
must only show his familiarity with firearms by "completing" any one of
several different types of "safety or training course or class." Sen.
Cuccinelli's bill would simply make it easier for applicants to obtain
those materials.
Please support my Second Amendment rights by voting to override the
governor's veto of these two bills.
