Thought you all would find this interesting, especially those from MO. I sent a standard form letter to my Senators from the Gun Owners of America web-site regarding my opposition to "Inter-American Convention Against Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials" take-action
and this is the response I got from Senator Claire McCaskill (D).

Thank you for contacting me regarding gun safety. I appreciate hearing from you, and I welcome the chance to respond.

Over the past year, a number of tragic shootings have occurred throughout the nation. As these incidents refocus national attention on the gun safety debate, we should strive to achieve common ground on the issue and we must take great care not to politicize the suffering of others.

Protecting innocent victims while at the same time protecting the gun ownership rights of law-abiding citizens is obviously still a work in progress. As a former prosecutor, I think we must do a better job on background checks for court-determined, dangerous mental conditions at the time of all gun sales. Also, I think we should consider placing certain restrictions on assault weapons and closing the gun show loophole. However, it is important that any attempt to promote appropriate gun safety measures must not infringe upon law-abiding citizens’ right to own firearms or unduly burden the hunting and sportsmanship culture of Missouri. As your United States Senator, I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind anytime Congress considers gun safety legislation.

I would suggest a reply questioning the reasons for the two mentioned issues. If the gun show loop hole only affects FFLs, then it's not horrible, but still not good. And in regards to the "assault weapons", what and who does this help??

Also, the 2nd Ammendment has NOTHING to do with "hunting and spotsmanship". It has to do with protection. She should be "informed" about that.

I would email her back and tell her that in the 2010 election that i will be voteing for someone else that actually believes in the 2nd Amendment and wants to fight for it and i will not vote for someone that is trying to have it both ways. She is acting like she is pro gun but i bet thats not the truth.

Well, that seems to be the problem with many politicians, instead of working for you they do what they think is best for you. We need to send them a message in 2010!

For those of you who don't speak Politicianese, allow me to translate.

"Thank you for contacting me about some gun-related issue. Whether it is what you were asking about or not, I'm going to refer to it as a 'gun safety' issue.

I am in favor of the second amendment. I am in favor of gun control. By making these two statements, my vote is immune from criticism, as I can cite either as my rationale.

We should place limits on assault weapons, though I'm not going to tell you what kind. This means that I can support anything from a bill saying that criminally insane cannibals shouldn't be allowed to have them, to saying that no one should have them (or anything in between). In turn, I can now go before whichever interest groups or donors give me the most support and adapt my position to theirs.

Claire got elected with the help of ACORN.

I've sent her numerous e-mails, to no avail. She is going to vote straight down the party-line.

She used to be a prosecutor in K.C. and was more conservative. Since being elected to the U.S. Senate, she has flip-flopped and is now a hard-left liberal.

She needs to be voted out.
