House asks governor to return guns in parks bill
WBIR.com | Knoxville, TN | House asks governor to return guns in parks bill
The sponsor of a bill to allow handguns to be carried in local parks says he's abandoning the proposal in exchange for the governor's promise not to veto a separate bill about guns in restaurants.
Republican Rep. Frank Niceley of Strawberry Plains says a revised version of his bill would be limited to allowing handgun carry permit holders to bring their weapons into state parks.
He says in return, Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen won't veto a bill that includes an effort to prevent local beer boards from denying permits to establishments that refuse to bar patrons carrying handguns.
Bredesen previously vetoed a bill to allow guns to be carried in bars and restaurants that serve alcohol. But that veto was overwhelmingly overridden in both chambers of the Legislature.
