Thumbs up Florida is on a ROLL!

    DATE: May 4, 2006
TO: USF & NRA Members and Friends
    FROM: Marion P. Hammer
    NRA Past President
Executive Director Unified Sportsmen of Florida

A bill supported by the National Rifle Association and Unified Sportsmen of Florida to prohibit confiscation of firearms following hurricanes (such as was done in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina) passed the Florida Legislature Thursday, May 4, and is on its way to Governor Jeb Bush (R) for his signature.

HB-285 sponsored by Representative Mitch Needelman (R-Melbourne) in the House and Senators Carey Baker (R-Eustis) and Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) in the Senate does the following:

    1. Amends the Emergency Management Powers Act to prohibit the governor from ordering or authorizing the seizure, taking, or confiscation of firearms that are lawfully possessed, unless a persona is engaged in a criminal act.

    2. Amends the Emergency Management Powers Act to prohibit any public official from ordering or authorizing the seizure, taking, or confiscation of firearms that are lawfully possessed, unless a persona is engaged in a criminal act.

The bill passed the House 116-0 and passed the Senate 40-0

Special thanks to Senate President Tom Lee (R-Brandon) and House Speaker Allan Bense (R-Panama City) for helping move this legislation.

SENATE (CO-SPONSORS) Senators J.D. Alexander (R), Mike Haridopolis (R), Burt Saunders (R), Steve Wise (R)

HOUSE (CO-SPONSORS) Thad Altman (R); Dennis Baxley (R); Fred Brummer(R); Donna Clarke (R); Faye Culp (R); Gayle Harrell(R); Will Kendrick (D); Paige Kreegel (R); John Legg (R); Dave Murzin(R); Dwight Stansel (D)

THOSE WHO VOTED AGAINST THE BILL IN THE HOUSE: NONE

THOSE WHO VOTED AGAINST THE BILL IN THE SENATE: NONE
Florida is on a legislative roll, recognizing, affirming and expanding the right of law abiding citizens to bear arms for personal protection.

    Matt

Yee-HAW! They obviously call Florida the Gunshine State for a very specific reason.

Now if they could do something about the heat and the "wind" (Understatement of the Year Award 2007 nominee), it'd be on top of my preferred residence list.

Why do they take guns away after natural disasters?

Why? - in case the citizens present a threat - totally disregarding those citizens constitutional rights.

The threat in fact from scumbags on a roll looting and pillaging afer a disaster is exactly why no one should be deprived their means of self protection. Those same bad guys too will not be the ones having weapons taken anyways under such circumstances - just the good guys.

Ask NOLA Mayor Nagin this question!!!

Because it is a good opportunity. Everything is in total chaos. There is no-one to talk to if you want to file a complaint because they are too busy doing something else. The justice system probably doesn't work because the courts are flooded or without power. Lawyers and judges are busy saving what's left of their homes or have evacuated the area. LE is granted "special powers" to curb looting. Phones don't work.
Thousands of big and little things disrupt the normal infrastructure that could and would usually be used to protect our civil (and human) rights.
And last but not least, "saving lives" is more important than the complaints of some gun nuts. Never mind that we are trying to save lives, too. Ours.
