I had been thinking about throwing down the $$ for an AR, but I realized that I'd rather be stuck in the woods for a month with an AK rather than a finicky AR, so I decided to trick out my SAR-3 in .223.
After some new furniture, a red dot and a Surefire G2 rig, my AK is ready for bug out, evac or whatever else decides to bump in the night en masse.

I think it's definitely an improvement! What do you think?
Very nice job! I'm still trying to find the time and energy to start my MAK-90...you'rs is a fantastic "model", as was Phil's. Thanks for the before and after! Great job.
nice looking gun. got to love the ak's in 223. got one myself in 223. i think itis better to have one in 223 here when things go bad. 223 ammo is eazy to find here.
Thanks guys, here's the list of mods for those who asked:
CAA upper and lower handguard set
Tapco collapsible stock
CAA vertical forend grip
Leatherwood red dot sight
CAA pistol grip
Uncle Mike's 3-point sling with O-ring attachments
ProMag magazine
I just got back from the range and the magazine functions 100%. I had to thin the feed lips when I got it though. I never expect Promag mags to work out of the box. I'll be buying about 3 more soon, to go with the 2 Weiger mags I already have. If I decide I really like the setup, the Leatherwood will eventually be replaced by a C-More holographic sight.
All the mods were bought from MidwayUSA. MSRP on all the mods combined is about $200.
Nice job. I plan on leaving my MAK91 as is now but just might buy another AK to play with though just to see how much I can change it around. Thanks for the list of parts.
:aargh4: Run for the hills!! It's an evil Black Rifle:gah:
NICE!! What SPECs can you post on the red-dot?
