Does your state have significant steps, in addition to the national government's requirements, to acquire a firearm -- long gun, handgun, other?

If your State has not already been reported, please comment with details, including State.

Yep, agree.

In Virginia dealing with an FFL...2 forms. The BATF 4473 and the State Police SP65. No application for a permit to buy a firearm, no denial of the type other than Class III without proper paper work, no 30 or 1 day wait, no more only one hand gun a month, and no requirements in a private sale. Hopefully private sellers will be diligent and make sure the buyer at least has a VADL. Most private sellers in VA want to see a ccw which is a good thing. FFL approvals may take 2 minutes or 8 hours. No rhyme or reason.

Well done. Particularity the, "2 minutes or 8 hours. No rhyme or reason."

I deleted my less complete duplicate comment.

Louisiana has a very significant constitutional amendment in the upcoming election that will toughen the state's constitutional protections for weapon owners and would give Louisiana the strongest gun protection in the nation. They say it could guard against possible future Supreme Court rulings that might affect the Second Amendment.

I don't have much doubt that is will pass overwhelmingly!

Florida, not really. Just background check and 3 day waiting period for hand guns, unless you have your CCW. Then you can take home same day.

Good question, but might have elicited different responses had you asked 'specific' rather than 'significant.' Significant can be subjective. What I consider to be a pain in the backside -- like, asking me any more questions than whether or not I like the gun -- might not be too much of a hassle to someone else.

I voted for the Handgun. I don't mind a background check for any gun. But the 48 hour wait on hand guns is a waste of my time. They should change the laws for CCL holders and omit the "cooling period" I like to collect many old guns including hand guns and I often do not purchase because I don't want the hassle of returning at a later date. I guess the "cooling period" would be ok for non carry permit holders, but in general I am against any more restrictions.

Fill out the form for instant check, out the door in as much time as it takes you to fill out the form.

New Mexico.

Agreed. And some of the best carry laws around. Most of them are common sense which is very "uncommon" these days.

In Nebraska you have to get a Purchase Permit that takes a few days to get back from your county Sheriff, lasts three years and with that you just show it when you buy a gun and that's it. No extra background check, NICs or whatever it is called.

Or you get a Concealed Handgun Permit that allows you to skip getting the Purchase Permit and allows you to purchase guns without any extra paperwork or background checks.

In Omaha if you have a CHL you can purchase and not register your handgun. If you don't have a CHL and only a purchase permit you have to leg it downtown to fill out paperwork/register your handgun before you can go back to a store and pick up the gun.

Oregon: Pretty simple. No registration; no waiting period; no listing the firearm on the CHL; no NICS check if private purchase; no documenting sales, if private sale; though, NICS check if sold/bought via FFL, or importing to state via purchase.

Good old NYS, still has an assault rifle ban, large cap mag ban and of course the noxious NYC rules that do not allow anyone with a otherwise valid NYS permit to carry in NYC without the blessing of the city - you need to be a politician, wealthy political doner or big celebrity to get a NYC carry permit.
