No stiffner needed. The downside of adding a stiffner - and this is moreso if you're a "widebody" - is that the belt can't contour to your body as it wears-in. Look at your leather belts that you have worn for a while - if you lay it out flat, it describes an arc. If there were a plastic stiffner in the belt, it couldn't do that and it would be uncomfortable to wear under some conditions. Jim's bullhide belts are plenty stiff enough as is.
