I'm a retired Navy Combat Systems engineer with small arms experience and it appears to me (from studying the LCP schematics) that the Ruger LCP recall is based on the possibility that the firing pin is free-floating and therefore it is possible that if dropped from sufficient height on the muzzle, the inertia of the firing pin could strike the primer with sufficient force to cause the LCP to fire. My son and I each have a 370 prefix LCP and have received return packages from Ruger but are now wondering if a modification really makes sense. This issue is not without precedent in handguns (I believe (know) that it was an issue with the 1911 (Gov't and pre-series 80 Colt comm'l) pistols as well as many others). Common sense handling would be in order as always and we may just be "pole vaulting over mouse turds" on this issue. I assume this recall will install some sort of firing pin block but what does that do to reliability, trigger pull, etc? Has anyone had the recall installed and did a "before and after" test? Personally, I'm not sure that this recall is really necessary (I like my LCP just as it is!).
