I was really annoyed the first time I was stopped at one of those checkpoints. All they did was ask if I had had anything to drink, but it felt like a big intrusion.

My mom disagreed with me, so she set me up on a ride-along for the next checkpoint.

Wow.

It was a seriously eye-opening experience. The number of drunk drivers that they caught that night was staggering. It made me not want to drive at all on weekend nights. I still can't believe there are so many people out there who have no qualms with the idea of risking everyone else's life for no particular reason.

The ratio of drunk drivers to sober ones was probably like 1/10.

The idea of it still bothers me, but for some reason I'd rather not be dead. It's not like they were asking if you owned guns, or whatever, it was more just "hey how's it going" and it was immediately obvious if someone was smashed. If not, they were on their way. If so, walk the line and get in the wagon.
