Best advice for traveling to "THE LOO" (the hip call it The Lou, but the English term is more appropriate, meaning toilet) is DON'T. But given you have already made that decision……
North side is the worst, but that is where they located the Cabella's. Central around Forest Park ain’t great but that is where the zoo is.
Guns in the stadium parking lot are OK
Guns carried in restaurants serving alcohol are OK (>51% of revenue from food so major restaurants are OK) jst stay out of the "bar" area; bars serving food (>51% from booze) are not. Even then violation is not a criminal offense.
Even if posted it is not a criminal violation to enter, if discovered all that supposed to happen is denial of service (asked to leave) if you refuse to leave and cops are call you get a trespass ticket. Although in “THE LOO” you can probably expect the cops to be called right away.
The police department is currently in trouble for excesses in parking fines/towing irregularities but I do not know if that has caused any relaxing of enforcement.
Open carry is legal but local governments can ban it and THE LOO is a hog-pog of small municipalities due to some historical restrictions on THE LOO expanding, so everything outside the core is a combination of small towns.
As THE LOO is right on the Mississippi River you cannot wind up in PDRIL without crossing a bridge, but it is possible to get caught past the last exit and have to cross, just hit the first exit and come back.
Across the river is East St. Louis: one place a decent citizen does not want to be (unless traveling sans females, then PM me and I will tell you of a couple places that could be of interest to a man traveling alone) so there are no good motels/hotels there.
Handguns in cars without a permit are legal if over 21
Missouri does not require LEO notification
