Remington, Mossburg, (Winchester, FN)
As Social Shotguns go...the Remington vs. Mossburg debate won't be settled today (nor will the Autoloader vs. Pump). Personally, I'm a Remington 870 man but have always wished the safety was tang-mounted like that of a Mossburg 500 series. Both have proven themselves capable & durable in the hands of many thousands of shooters over multiple decades of production. The Remington holds a slight edge in availability, popularity & serves as the starting point for some of the most advanced fighting shotguns (Wilson Combat, Vang Comp, etc.) in Military & Law Enforcement use. Let's not forget the very speedy Winchester pump models (practically as fast as an autoloader) & the new FN models just recently adopted by the U.S.M.C.
All things considered, for combo sport & defense use, in a cost-effective package...almost HAS to be the Rem 870 Express Magnum, 12 gauge, synthetic stock, Home Defense model. Then pick-up a spare vent rib, 24-26" rem-choke barrel for bird, waterfowl, turkey, coyote, deer, whatever. It will ALWAYS be worth what you pay for it & isn't too expensive to use as an emergency boat paddle (like every OTHER Duck Hunter I've ever known)!
Good Shooting,
Ghost Tracker
