How fast you recoup your investment really depends on how much you shoot. I go through about 10-12K of .45ACP a year alone which costs me about $985 or so to load.
So I’ve probably paid for my equipment in 6 months.
I usually go in with some of the guys I shoot with when it comes to buying components. HAZMAT fees suck, but split 3 ways aren’t all that bad and are cheaper than local purchase. Also, a lot of the commercial casting outfits will offer discounts on bulk orders, so we usually order 5-10K at a time. The USPS flat rate really helps and you can ship around 2250 of 200 SWCs for around $8.
I used to cast my own pistol bullets, but I just can’t keep up and still have time for anything else. Casting and lube/sizing 1200-1500 bullets a month is a PITA, so I’d rather write a check. The only bullets I cast myself now are my match bullets for my BPCRs.
The newer 231 does burn clean, but you have to keep in close to max loads. For me it’s not a problem because I’m trying to maintain my power factor for IDPA anyway.
