Actually, I didnt test with the gun unloaded. I trust my XD45 safety and I handle it as if it is loaded all the time, which it is unless I am cleaning it or am about to hand it to someone else to fondle. I always drop the mag, clear weapon, and lock slide back before I hand the gun to anyone.

At no time does my trigger finger go anywhere near the trigger unless I am ready to fire. My draw has been practiced and my finger naturally falls along the slide, even when I went to IWB holster.

So, that being said, I practice with a loaded weapon so that I never get any tendency to think that the gun ISN'T loaded. This doesnt include times I practice trigger pull (dry fire exercises!)
