Please, if you do write letters, point out that the "National Parks are safe" myth is just that, a myth. The NPS's numbers are faulty, and here's just a few reasons why:
- They count number of visitors based on whether or not people are in the park for 1 minute or 1 week.
- They do not compare to city crime statistics because people live in cities full time, but only visit national parks for a short period.
- Given population density in National parks at a given moment, the crime statistics do not compare favorably *at all* to other areas of the country with similar population density.
- If the parks are so safe, why is National Park Ranger the most dangerous federal law enforcement job, with a Ranger being 12 times more likely to be killed or injured on the job than an FBI agent?
- In terms of specific safety, a Ranger may be HOURS away when I need help and have no ability to call 911, whereas my local police are minutes away.
There's more! Chime in everyone! You might point out that "I am 'the people' and I'm not confused by this new rule."
