Once you can safely handle your firearm, know your laws, have a good holster/belt, I'd say wait until the day you wake up and know that you'll need it that day. If you haven't got the ability to tell ahead of time when you might need it, I guess you'd better start packing tomorrow. FWIW, I think a basic CCW class taught by a reputable instructor is a fantastic investment if you haven't had one, even if your state doesn't require it.
