I just press the lock and give the knife a gentle downward flick. The blade will move enough to disengage the lock and you can then close it with you thumb. The native has a choil (unsharpened portion of the blade right in front of the handle) that will keep the blade from contacting your fingers even if you get a little too frisky with it.
