Lacking a for-sure headshot, I think HotGuns's approach is the best.
It depends on just how "crippled" or "wounded" the subject deer is.
If it ain't a for-sure headshot, I don't think I'd be using a handgun of any type.
Probably wouldn't go for the butt-shot, even with a .460 Weatherby....
