Angry U-Hauls and cops...

Twice in my life I've been forced into making long-distance moves via rented U-Haul trucks. On BOTH occasions, I was stopped for "traffic violations" while driving the speed limit on open highways with practically no other vehicles in sight. Keep in mind that I have a total of five traffic tickets in 40 years of driving.

The first time was at night in Iowa. The cop accused me of speeding. I wasn't and I knew it, but I just shut up and let him go through with his radio calls, etc. Amazingly, he didn't write me a ticket. I had a fresh "high and tight" haircut, on my way to Camp Lejeune and it turned out the guy was a former Marine. He handed me a warning and said "semper fi" and let me go.

The second time I was going south on I-25 in New Mexico in broad daylight in light traffic through the middle of the desert south of Albuquerque. I was being passed by almost everything on the road. A NMHP pulled me over, saying he'd clocked me at 15 mph over the speed limit and that I'd made an illegal lane change. I hadn't been out of the right hand lane in miles and miles. Again, there's no doubt the cop was lying on both counts. But I just handed over my license and rental agreement and was totally cooperative. I didn't even question the charges he was levelling at me. He went back to his cruiser and did the usual radio calls, etc. As he came back, I was expecting a ticket, but instead he let me off with a verbal warning

I can't explain it. In both cases I was sure it was going to cost me lots more than I could afford, but in both cases I got out free. Maybe in both cases, the cops KNEW they were wrong and didn't want to press the issue since I have a clean record.

But my very strong suspicion is that U-Hauls attract cops like twisters to trailer courts. They KNOW you're just passing through carrying all of your earthly possessions and that makes you extremely vulnerable for whatever revenue generators they can conjure up on the spot. They know you'll be wanting to go on your way ASAP and are highly unlikely to cross several states to contest the charges in court next week. Especially since you'll be wrapped up in a new job and moving into a new house at the same time. So they feel very comfortable in writing up tickets they know you're very likely to pay with no hassles to them.
