I see a .380 as practical for a BUG, a pocket pistol, such as the Kel-Tec P-3AT, Ruger LCP, the upcoming Kahr .380. It's compactness is the primary reason to pick it.
For a weapon the size of a Bersa Thunder, I'd prefer to have a Kahr MK/PM9. I've looked at Kel-Tec PF-9s quite a few times, and I just can't bring myself to buy one. They just don't feel right to me. The Kahrs are a whole different story. The look and feel are excellent.

You answered your own question when you said;
"They just don't feel right to me. The Kahrs are a whole different story. The look and feel are excellent." It could be that's exactly how people feel about their pistol of choice, be it a .22lr or a howitzer.
The size of the gun has more to do with the size of the human hand...not the caliber.
