Actually, if you position your firearm high enough and under the armpit - you don't need the back strap at all or any tie down on the firearm side.
Depending on how tight your spare mag pouches are it might help to have a tie down on the mag side.
Just my opinion that as illustrated above - that firearm is positioned too low and so (of course) you would need a back strap for that carry location.
The firearm positioned as depicted there or down near the belt is for the TV detective movies and not for real world shoulder carry.
That having been said - the monarch is a great shoulder rig.
Just my opinion.
