I like the TDI and finds that it hides very well, even at the waistband. I do not think it's a good knife for someone who does not intend to get training with the knife: it's not that the TDI is hard to use, but it's a very specialized tool that can't veer far from its niche. For a fixed blade, the Emerson La Griffe posted earlier might be the best option for a first defensive knife. Just don't carry it as a neck knife.
