It does have the drawback of needing contact, plus the effect is only valid as long as you're willing to keep contact, which doesn't make sense for a defense scenario.

I guess it works for prison guards or nightclub bouncers - basically, pain compliance, not so much pure defense. I guess its better than nothing but overall, doesn't seem like a great choice. Upside is that it is legal to carry in many areas. For example, I can carry one on my campus legally for self-defense.
