You might want to try a CRKT
Bear Claw. 2 3/8" blade or so, a nice hole for your index finger for control and retention, and a Zytel sheath. Probably getting one for myself soon as I was impressed with what I felt when I tried a few basic drills at the store the last time I held one. Also, 3-4 inches seems to be the magic number for the transfer from "tool" to "weapon" in almost all jurisdictions despite just about everything important you'd want to be taking a hack at in a defensive situation being within 2" or so of the skin.
