I've got several Amazon gift certificates that have piled up over time. The oldest is about to expire.

My sister had intended they go toward James Bond DVDs, but told me I could get what I want. I already have them on VHS and think it would be a waste of money.

I have wanted "Cooper on Handguns", but don't know if it's worth $100. I'm sure most of the info is considered outdated, but the Colonel is usually a good read.

I welcome any comments & suggestions.

Maybe something from any of the old Masters, like Elmer Keith, Bill Jordan, Skeeter Skelton, Chic Gaylord, or even that pompous old windbag, Charley Askins.

Good question.

My tastes probably run toward the traditional. My library looks something like:

Some Kuhnhausen books.
Pat Sweeney's Gunsmithing for Pistols and Revolvers
Ditto for Rifles
Gun Digest Book of _____ Disassembly (All 5)
Surgical Speed Shooting
The Art of the Rifle by Cooper
Principles of Personal Defense by Cooper
No Second Place Winner by Jordan
Sixguns by Keith
Wilson's .45 auto book (Name escapes me)
McGivern's Fast & Fancy Revolver Shooting
Texas Gun Owner's Guide by Korwin
The Concealed Handgun Manual by Chris Bird

Long story, but my library's all packed up right now, so this is from memory. As you can tell, my tastes run toward the traditional. I don't want to read something that's faddish, but I'm willing to read good modern stuff.

At the risk of being ex-communicated, I'll admit I've never read any of Skeeter's stuff. On the rare occasion I pick up G&A (a Viagra catalog disguised as a gun rag) Bart Skelton's column is one of the first I read. I don't know how much their stuff is alike.

I enjoy Taffin, but haven't taken the plunge on either of his books. I've thought about getting Ed Lovett's snubnose book. I've also thought about some of Fairbairn's stuff you see in the Paladin Press ads. As mentioned in the opening post, I've long wondered if Cooper on Handguns was worth the read or is miserably outdated.

Bottom line--Storytelling is good, but I'd rather have a reference book to learn something from.

Anybody have any favorites I'm missing?

Note: Apologies to my HS English teacher for failing to properly italicizing the title of book when referencing it.

Since you say you've never read any of Skeeter's stuff, I'll say this. As a gunwriter, Bart Skelton couldn't carry his dad's typewriter.

I dont know if they are available from Amazon, but I've started paying attention to Clint Smith, the man knows what he is talking about. He has a few training DVD's out, and I'm not sure about books.
