Traveler's Guide to Firearm Laws
I just received the 2008 Traveler’s Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States. Right off the bat I’ve found 10 states that I have no intention of ever setting foot in.
This book will be a good starting point for checking out gun laws in any state that I plan to visit. It gives a ranking of each state’s overall gun laws from “Total Prohibition” to “Total Freedom”, along with a quick checklist of how the state addresses such things as firearms ownership, assault weapon ownership, machine gun ownership, firearm law uniformity, right of self-defense, open carry, concealed carry and vehicle carry & transportation. Finally, a few paragraphs discuss the major points of the checklist items for each state. Again, it’s only a starting point. In the back is a list of each state’s Contact Agencies to go to for more detail on the tricky “minor” points that drive us all crazy. It’s available through the NRA online bookstore for $10 plus $2 shipping. |

That is one of my two primary resources. The other is a website that generates maps. Have a look at Handgunlaw.us.
