All steel Colt [Combat]Commander every day. With a good holster and belt, I really find it a non-issue.

1911 muzzle velocity vs. barrel length
Quote:
I also seem to recall that the 3 inch barrel gives about 11% lower velocity than the 5 inch barrel. |

Yepper...for years. I still carry an all steel Combat Commander often plus extra mags.
A great holster and a great gun belt will make it easy.

Daily I carried a 5 inch Wilson CQB, like some one has already mentioned, a good belt, good holster and no problems.

I carry my Kimber Custom II everyday with no issues. I carry it OWB at 3:30 in a G-Code kydex paddle holster with a 15* cant. The belt is a simple but 3/16" thick Dickies work belt. It's rather comfortable, to the point where I miss it when it's not there.

I carried a full sized 1911 Springfield Operator (the original one) with a light attached on and off duty for several years, and that is the heaviest 1911 out there. Thank you Don Hume.

S&W 4566. It isn't a 1911, but I think it's close enough to answer the original question.
I know that when I first got it I thought it was heavy, but it's pretty much a part of me now. I'm certainly attached to it, anyway! |
