Great idea and work. I love my 1911s but do get aggravated when I don't fully depress the grip safety. I've even looked at Novak's "The Answer" solid backstrap, but I like this better.

I was trying to remember who did that, I thought Novak, but wasn't sure. I remember seeing an article about it. I guess now we've got two 'answers'. LOL.

Just to be sure this is understood, the frame attached beavertail helps a lot, but may not totally eliminate the problem for some.

With the very important difference that this doesn't disable any safeties, and thus doesn't come with lawyers attached.

I was set on the Answer despite the liability issues, but this is much better.

I seem to recall someone hinging up the grip safety with a new pin on the lower end, so that one would push it in on the upper part rather than the lower part. Am I just imagining things? If that were combined with this, I'd say it'd be the perfect 1911 grip safety for us 'skinny handed' high-thumb holding folks.

Does any one here remember who first came out with with the solid back strap back in the late 70s, early 80s.
I seem to remember that the grip safety wasn't in John M's original design, it was the military that required it. That's why when he designed the P35, there was no grip safety, or was it because of all the overhead linkage in the Browning. I never could figure out the rational behind the grip safety.
If I wasn't so worried about some attorney using it against me if my 1911 were ever involved in a shooting, I'd pin it as I've done in my competition guns.

No, the other way around. The original M1911 design had no thumb safety, only a grip safety. The thumb safety was added at the behest of the cavalry.

There's a picture floating about of the original without a thumb safety.

joffe's pretty much correct, this is John Browning's original design, it was called the M1910, he added the thumb safety and it became the M1911.
