Condition code for a 1911?

Im assuming this is military terminology, but what are these conditions I hear people refer to when discussing whether or not the gun is loaded, chambered, or the safety is on.
I think I gather that condition 1 is cocked and locked, and condition 0 is cocked and unlocked. Thats all Ive figured out so far, and those might not even be right.

Here ya go:

Quote:
Condition 0 - A round is in the chamber, hammer is cocked, and the safety is off.

Condition 1 - Also known as "cocked and locked," means a round is in the chamber, the hammer is cocked, and the manual thumb safety on the side of the frame is applied.

Condition 2 - A round is in the chamber and the hammer is down.

Condition 3 - The chamber is empty and hammer is down with a charged magazine in the gun.

Condition 4 - The chamber is empty, hammer is down and no magazine is in the gun.

As an addendum, in general, Condition One is preferred for 1911 carry. Condition Two is an accident waiting to happen. Some people carry in Condition Three, but not many, and that forces them to become familiar with the 'Israeli draw'.

Just how about does one safely go about putting a 1911 in Condition 2? Pull the trigger with your thumb on the hammer? I just cannot see how this Condition would be safe or practical.

Or not at all.

There's no valid reason to carry or store a 1911 in condition 2.

Don't forget to wear ear protection.

Captain Crunch is right, there is no reason to carry one in condition 2.

Good question, great responses. A follow-up, then...

While I LOVE the two 1911's I have, I'm very uncomfortable carrying in condition one. Is this silly? Should I lump it and simply get used to it?

Something about DA triggers make me feel more comfortable as relates to regular CC.

I had this fear many, many moons ago when I first started carrying.....my first EDC was a Springer 1911. I got over it by carrying "cocked n locked" with no round chambered for a few days.
Once I realized the safty was not slipping to "fire" and waiting to go off, I started carrying condition one and have never had an issue, weather on duty or off.
