At first I thought you handled it with "BBQ fingers". I think S&W will make it right, quickly.

The type of stainless steel that won't attract a magnet is a totally inappropriate material for a firearm. Not strong enough.

Update
My pistol arrived back from S&W to its original point of sale today and I got my pistol back.
*Please note* The delay was due only to my inability to get to a UPS hub to ship the firearm. I finally had a free Saturday when I could get to the store where I purchased the pistol (about an hour from my house) and they sent it back to S&W for me. I dropped it off on Saturday, 21 June and it was back today, 2 July. The clerk at the store told me S&W were running about 6 week lead times when I dropped off the gun, so I was presently surprised when I got back to my office from lunch today and found the message on my voicemail. I picked up the pistol this evening. The letter stated the slide had been replaced, function tested, and found to meet S&W standards. The pistol, in fact, had been fired as I had dropped it off clean as a whistle. The take-down lever also had been replaced as it had rusted. Cliff's Notes: Carried pistol for one day, found the slide had rusted. Called S&W to report the problem just so they'd have it on file. S&W sent me a pre-paid UPS overnight label. I dilly-dallied for a couple of months in sending it back and ended up shipping via the FFL dealer from which I purchased. I waited 1.5 weeks for S&W to fix it and hopefully the same thing doesn't happen again. I am very pleased with S&W's handling of the situation. Their CS department knows how to take care of their customers.

Yay! Good for you.
The only problem I've had with my slide is there was little specks of rust on one part of the slide where I would rack it back during a really hot and sweaty IDPA match and didn't clean it or even wipe it down for a week. Shame on me.

Glad they took care of you. Did they throw in any spare mags for your trouble?

I wish they did, but, no, I didn't get any mags other than the two free from the promo when I bought the gun.
