My brother is a newer grad and just got hired on to a police department a couple months back and was issued a P226 in 9mm. They are not replacing the .40's that the officers in his dept. already have, but new hires are getting 9mm's from what he said.

In NYS most of the Depts are actually getting rid of 9mm and going with .40SW. Westchester County PD just got rid of their S&W 5946s in 9mm and went with the M&P in .40.
I have Glocks in all three calibers. I do shoot my 19 (9mm) better than my 23 (.40 SW). But I still shoot my 23 very well. I feel very confident to get good COM hits with good follow up shots with my 23. That being said, I don't feel outgunned with my 19 which also gets good COM hits.

Really strange. I buy .40 cheaper than 9mm and my .40 Sig is just as accurate and easy to shoot as my 9mm (if not moreso). Must be the Glock platform is very difficult for many people to shoot in the .40. That would explain alot.

At least for the little Kahrs, which I know isn't really relevent to this specific discussion, the .40 is a mule compared to the 9mm. Follow-up shots with the 9mm are much faster and far more accurate than with the .40.
Considering that these guns are being used widely as BUGs, would it not make sense to use the easy-to-shoot 9mm and a service pistol in the same caliber? |

I hope it's true that PD depts are casting off 40's for 9's. I would like to get my hands on some of the PD 40's for a reasonable price. 40 S&W kicks harder than any 9 in a comparable weight weapon but you gotta love the punch of 40 caliber. Never been in law enforcement but if I was I would want nothing less than 40 caliber at crunch time.
