Heh, this is strange indeed. I've shot .22's from the companies you mention (excluding minimags but with a handful of other manufacturers) using a dozen rifles and three pistols. I would consider one of the pistols and at least three of the rifles very reliable. In all situations, I had fairly regular misfires. On the cheapo rifles, it was often the firing pin -- all you have to do is lift the bolt (not opening it, just lifting), close it again, pull the trigger again. But outside of those, it was the ammo... Maybe you have magic fingers or something

I have not shot the Eley Match, or, I suppose, any match grade ammo. So I suppose I can't speak for all .22 ammo.

My vote is for the P22 over no gun at all. If you spend lots of time at the range with it, something you have no excuse not to do given the cost of the ammo, you can become quite proficient at quick target aquisition, clearing jams, replacing magazines, getting off double taps and all kinds of useful skills that you want to become second nature in a pressure situation. In sum a 22 is conducive to practice practice practice, which is a good thing to have under your belt when you inevitably upgrade.

I am truly curious, how did you arrive at this conclusion?

You must be really lucky. I get about one dud per box with the Federal 550 rds value pack.

My opinion is that caliber isn't all that important for non-LEO usage.

Hmm. Your "perception" that the .22 has "ample power" is dangerous thinking and just simply uneducated at best.

Your comment that caliber isn't important in non-LEO applications has me shaking my head. Are thugs more sensative to civilian bullets or do people die differently when shot with a civilian bullet as opposed to a LEO round ? Or, should we just relegate ourselves to having to shoot them more times than a LEO has to shoot them to stop the threat ? Or , is the real thought behind your statement that civilians don't really face a threat since we aren't in uniform ?

If I'm understanding the implication of your last statement, you almost sound like you're coming from the mindset of the group that believes civilians don't really need to carry because there isn't really a threat. Very naive IMO.

Civilians DO meet the same serious thugs LEO do. These thugs don't CARE if you are LEO or not and it takes the same amount of flesh trauma to neutralize them no matter if you're LEO or civilian. So, caliber is AS CRITICAL for civilian use as it is for LEO.

Jerry, no offense but you need to re-evaluate where you are in the firearms / carry world.

I might as well chime in. Personally I wouldnt even consider carrying any type of 22 caliber firearm to protect myself or my family. With so many other smaller guns of a higher caliber available, why would you even consider it. I just bought a Ruger LCP in .380 and that is as small caliber as I will go. It fits in my pocket too.

This is just my opinion, which only has meaning to me

Friday night was the first time I had ever held a 22, and on Saturday was the first time I had shoot one. A friend had recommended buying on to practice with. Now I'm sure a 22 would hurt, but would I use it for carry - No!!!

Would I depend on a 22 to stop a drugged-up BG, again No!!! It's a lot about the comfortablility factor, if you are comfortable with the idea of shooting a 22 to protect yourself and your family then by all means carry and use a 22.

If anything, from a civil liability standpoint, as civilians we're far better off shooting them as few times as necessary to stop the threat. A LEO has the backing of the state and protection from liability - depending on the laws in our state, we may have little to no immunity from liability.

I know I'd much rather shoot someone a single time to make them stop doing whatever it was that made me have to shoot them in the first place, than have to "viciously fill them full of lead" as some lawyer is no doubt going to describe to a jury.

I've shot over 3000 rounds (3155 to be exact) of Federal 550 since I got my Ruger Single Six nine months ago. I have never had one bad round.

GUYS,

I don't intend to offend anyone -- just sharing my opinions:

1. One of my hunting partners is an M.D. that used to work the ER in the city hospital. He observed dozens of shootings and says the .22 was particularly deadly, often DOA. Almost always destructive and instant cessation of hostility.

2. I'm 67 years old and have NEVER needed to even draw my CCW. Almost all of us will get through this life with similar experience. How many here (non-LEO) have ever fired a shot in self defense?

3. I fired competitive pistol for many years, and am confident of my ability to place multiple hits in any BG close enough to bother me or my spouse.

4. Any .22 pistol has minimal recoil and muzzle jump. Its easy to get 5 or 10 quick hits on target. Also, no tendency to flinch.

5. My Walther P-22 has NEVER misfired in thousands of practice rounds.

6. I've hunted squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, and 'possum with .22 rifles for many years, and observed wound damage first hand.

7. I don't suggest that others do so, but I am quite confident and comfortable carrying a P-22 CCW.

8. If you think you need a 15 shot wonder-nine and two extra magazines to defend yourself, then by all means, that is what you should carry, and try to conceal. Personally, I can't imagine firing 30+ rounds in a populated environment, or on the mall parking lot.
