Tried both. Went with the M&P.

I've never regretted it. 1000+ rounds through it and shoots great.
Piece of cake to conceal.

The safety is the one between your ears. Train yourself to NEVER put your finger on the trigger until you want to destroy something.

The M&P changed my mind about polymer pistols. I am a 1911 guy thru and thru. However I love my M&P 9c I have put about 5000 rds thru and not a single hicup zero I shoot it for IDPA and do rather well. It is very accurate and fast. I sold my XD never could get used to the feel.

I used to own an XD. It was a good gun, but I was not as accurate with it as other guns for whatever reason. I sold it and now I carry the M&P 40c. The M&P is the best feeling polymer I have held, and I like the trigger.

I carry it in a crossbreed and its a cinch to hide and very comfortable. I also have a Magazine Safety on the M&P. Which basically means that if I drop the mag the gun will not fire. So if i get into a scuffle i can drop the mag to prevent someone from shooting me with my own gun.

I don't think I could go back to an XD at this point. I love the M&P too much.

Matt

What was so different about the feel with the XD than the M&P?

The XD is heavier in the slide, and heavier overall. In fact, after owning an XD subcompact .40, I decided it was too top heavy and large for what it was. 26 ounces and 4.75 inches tall vs. about 24 ounces and 4.3 inches tall for the M&P. For another .25 inches in height, I could get a Glock 23, which was both slimmer and lighter and holds 13+1. The barrel is longer, but the barrel is not the part on a handgun that is hard to conceal....the grip is.

I have owned a couple of M&P .40 compacts, and they were not reliable. However, it seems that many people are happy with them now. Perhaps the bugs are worked out? I did recently pick up an M&P 45 full size at a great price, and I am VERY happy with it. It is reliable, and a blast to shoot. It's a soft shooter, and so are the .40's. You'll get a lot less muzzle flip out of an M&P compact vs. an XD, which has a higher bore axis. I love the feel of my M&P .45 so much, I got rid of my Glock 21sf and now use the M&P as my house gun. I kept the Glock tactical light, however, and it now hangs off of the rail on my M&P. Don't tell Gaston, he'll get heartburn.

The grip safety on the XD also annoyed me. It locks up the slide if not fully depressed. I don't care for needless complication on a pistol...safety is between your ears.

If you want the best power to weight ratio in a true subcompact .40, get a Glock 27. 21 ounces, 4.17 inches tall, 9+1, uber-reliable. The blocky feeling is not as ergonomic as either the XD or M&P, but its reliability is proven. Going by ergonomics alone, the M&P feels best in the hand to me. YOU have got to handle each one to see what works best for you. The M&P does come with 3 different sized backstraps, for different sized hands.

The XD is made in Croatia, the M&P is made in the US, if that matters to you. They are equally safe, as long as YOU are.

How do you like the holster? And did you have night sights put on it?

yesterday I shot a bunch of rounds thru a buddy's m and p 9mm full size and loved it.How does the grip of the compact compare width wise?I know it's shorter....it fit my hand perfectly w/ the small back strap.I've yet to fondle the compact, but I'm afraid when I do,I'll NEED one.

If you're talking about the holster that comes with the XD, it's junk. Good only for range use, and even suspect for that. It's flimsy, the belt loops are too big, it doesn't hold the pistol securely. I suppose you could stick the pistol in the junk holster to keep the trigger covered while it sits in a drawer, but that's the only thing I'd use it for.

Didn't have night sights on mine, but they are readily available for either pistol.

I was in the same situation and decided to get the M&P 40c. I didn't like the grip safety on the XD and the fact that it was so top heavy. Just got it a couple days ago and no range time yet...

I'm planning on going to our gun shop in the very near future to hold both of them side by side. I've heard that the XD was top heavy. The M&P feels better in my hand. I like the extension grip on the clip. On the XD my pinky finger hangs on the bottom. It doesn't with the M&P.
