Can you explain why it needs a 2008 date code?

Make sure your M&P has an 2008 manufacturer date and you should be good to go. Expect a new to the market gun to have some teething issues initially. Smith has been outstanding in their CS by the way for the guns that were having issues.
So have they fixed the rusty slide issues on the newer M&P? I've seen a few pics of different M&Ps with all kinds of corrosion, and at least two of them were the "stainless" model.

My Bi-Tone XD started corroding in the cocking serrations on the slide, which is what led me to finally get rid of it, and I wouldn't consider any gun for carry that had similar issues.

The 2008 date code models should have all of the current updates.

Stainless does not mean it wont/cant rust without proper care. My M&P has never shown any signs of rust at all. Id send it back if your having rust issues. SW will make it right.

There have been several updates to the frame, an update to the 9mm magazine followers, guide rod, and the type of steel used to make magazine release. They also changed the finish on the magazines.
