I am trading in my p345 and xd-40 looking for $450, but wishing for $550, and that is going to determine what is left over. $200 is the target max out of pocket I want to spend.

They had a used kimber custom I or II for $570 IIRC. I'm going to adventure outdoors here in marietta, they have many new and used weapons at VERY good prices.

I had the chance to shoot a LWT Kimber Pro at the range not long ago (4"), not sure which model it was but I was really impressed with it. For a LWT model it had next to no recoil and was way more accurate than I was expecting. After my Colt Commander I might very well get the Kimber Pro Carry that's at the same shop (maybe change the sights to three dot or Tritiums). Make sure you let us know which flavor you end up with.

the best of both worlds

I keep reading that most posters are having issues with the grip off the 1911 Govt. / Cmdr. Well there are 1911s out there for everone.
I carry a Para CCW LDA, it's a true 4 1/4 bushing model with an officers grip. To some 1911 fanatics this weapon is heresy but I love it. The longer barrel still gives good results on paper and the shorter grip is easier to hide in my Galco Royal Guard, NSA II, and JA shuolder holster. Colt and Kimber make similar versions of this size.
My only dislilke of the Para as seen in my avatar is the abbreviated grip safety that makes for comfortable carry but is a little irritating during a long range section. I previouly had a 3" Para Warthog and had zero failures of any sort, but didn't care for the double stack width. I have a Colt Series 70 Combat Cmdr, the Para CCW, and an older S.A. Loaded Model all can be easily concealed pending in body type. I have not experienced any real issues due purley to barrel length. Most differences I attribute to gun make. All around I'd say my best 1911 is the S.A. Loaded model with Chip McCormick 8rd mags but the Para CCW is a more cormfortalbe CCW option in my book.

Shoot straight, carry smart.

1911

I have two 4.25 inch barrel, Para LTC's and a Para 3 inch, Slim Hawg.
Not a problem with any of them. Perfect out of the box. I have about 1500 rounds thru the 3 pistols. The Slim Hawg is awesome, comfortable, concealable, dead accurate and +1 reliability.

I dont know that I will carry any 1911 that I purchase, but I think the 4" would be easier to conceal if I chose to do so.

What makes a bull-barrel undesireable to some people? What are the pros and cons of it? (a bull barrel is bushingless, no?)

Thanks
A bull barrel can be just as tight fitted as a bushing barrell. I own 5'' Kimber, 4.25" Para, two 4" RIA's. and a 3" WartHog I do not have a problem with them. I did drop[ the 4.25" Para off at the gunsmith for a meltdown and a reliablity job. Here's my ROCKS.
