When carrying concealed, unless it's requred by law in the state, there's no point in blurting out "I'm armed"...unless it's relevant to what's going on or if asked, you're doing nothing wrong, so why act like you are....

Sounds to me like both you and the officer acted exactly right. Can you imagine a police officer NOT investigating if he saw a person handling a handgun in a residential neighborhood? And, for that matter, handcuffing a person "of interest" is the safest thing for both officer and "suspect" (until the officer clarifies the situation). In my judgment, you did exactly the right thing by immediately informing the officer that you were (legally) armed. Nobody was endangered. Nobody got hurt. And your reaction probably helped our cause.

These kinds of interactions are going to happen. I think you BOTH "done good".

Carrying a concealed, loaded, firearm without a permit in the state of Tennessee is a Class A Felony. Not only would you be facing felony charges, your chance of ever getting a CCW permit would be gone. If you do not have a permit, do not carry a firearm until you do!
Difference in AZ Law VS TN law here (My understanding, with a good grasp on TN) is that AZ law allows for those with out permits to carry as long as they are 2 actions away from firing. hence the reason he emptied his chamber.. Once he hit private property though he was legal and if the cop Knowing he was armed ordered him off he then had to comply there by being legal.

YMMV

OK folks, what am I missing? Why were you detained/handcuffed? What's not being said in the post?

It's perfectly logical to want an answer as to why the event occurred in the first place.
Yea, what gives here? I would definitely want to know why all this took place.

Do you have a CC permit? It sounded from your post as if you do not have a permit to carry.

I'm guessing this has something to do with it.

I can't blame any police officer for being extra cautious after a local shooting. It also sounds like the officer was polite and respectful which would go along way. There is definitely a gray area in the legally armed citizen and police interactions. As long as both sides are polite, respectful, and honest I would tend give officer's the benefit of the doubt.

I guess id like to know why you were messing with your gun in the first place.

Every time you handle your weapon you risk a ND. I understand your "friend" doesnt like you OWB carry in his home, but if why remove the mag and unchamber a round? Just move it to IWB. However if he doesnt want you armed in his home, thats a different story.

I can also understand you not wanting to leave it in your vehicle due to the possibility of theft, bt just remember that handling your firearm increases your chances of a ND.

On a side note, any close friends whos home i visit know i carry and know that i will not disarm, heck, none of my friends would even ask me to disarm.

Any other aquaintance whos home i must enter into, doesnt have to know i carry.
