Sounds like something that should be forwarded to the Secret Service.

The gene pool is very poluted! I left Orlando, Florida (recently voted the angriest city in America) and moved to Colorado. My first impression of the masses out here was that the most pressing issues to most people in Colorado was which liberal got their vote and which social cause got their attention that month. Thankfully, I've met some normal, like-minded people since (now, to get my son out of Orlando...)!

I open-carry whenever I hike or climb as I realize (and so does the State) that I am not at the top of the food chain. The sad reality is I encounter idiots on the trail and inevitably I am questioned about why I carry. The typical response to my answer is, "oh, the animals are just exercising their rights to live! They won't hurt you (mountain lions, bears). All you have to do is talk to them...." YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK! Everytime my wife & I go up the mountain, our objective is to make it back down in one piece.

Two-legged predators are always a threat too!

Its a funny thing to me that I can legally carry my gun to McDonalds, and even take my grandkids into the play area with a bunch of other kids running around but if I cross the line into the Smoky Mountain NP I can no longer be trusted to behave responsably.

This topic came up with my local news and they asked for any comments, so this is what I sent them:
Quote:
Of 274 million visitors to national parks last year, there were 13 murders, 44 rapes, nine armed robberies, 60 aggravated assaults, 270 burglaries and 100 vehicle thefts, according to Park Service records and this is not counting animal attacks.

Allowing law abiding people to have their firearms in a National Parks, were to stop one of these attacks it would be worth it. I'd rather hear the numbers for justifiable homicide go up and the murder or rape numbers go down.

By not allowing law abiding citizens to practice their 2nd amendment rights in National Parks, then the only people with guns in the parks will be the criminals. Because you and I both know that a sign at the gate will not stop them.

Thanks,
Richard Gramm, USAF Retired, Rigby

When seconds count, the police are still minutes away.
And this is what they read on the news later that day:
Quote:

They may have left most of it out, but I still was happy part got in the 6 oclock news.

I go to Yellowstone 2-3 times a year since it's only about a hour and a half away from my house.

There have been many stupid people doing stupid things. The biggest elk in the park was killed a few years ago by a guy who shot it, cut off it's antlers and took them to be mounted. The guy that was supposed to mount them was able to recognize them and the guy got busted. Did the "NO guns" sign at the gate stop this? Ya right.

Or the guy with the 4X4 that decided to bury his truck in the paint pots. Did the "Stay on paved roads" sign keep him from being a dumba$$?

Dirk Kempthorne is from Idaho, we have some of the best gun laws in Idaho and he knows that just because you have a gun it doesn't make you stupid.

Stupid people will do stupid things in a National Parks or not, with or without guns.

Thanks for all the responses guys. It just never ceases to amaze me how the anti-gun crowd can continue to live in their little bubbles. Their world consists of open meadows full of flowers, white doves flying all around and freshly made pies sitting in everyone's windows to cool. I wish it were like this in the real world but we know differently unfortunately. (I will have to admit that I could go for some pie right now though! MMMMM... pie)

IMO, too many people want to carry in the National Parks because they are afraid of the animals. I can just see it now, somebody whipping out their Keltec and wounding a bear, making an innocent animal injured and dangerous.

I've been up in the Boundary Waters (national forest) alone and had the thrill of being serenaded by a pack of wolves around my camp and I've shared my small island campsite with a moose. The vast majority of black bears are shy and will not be a problem...unless idiots start wounding them.

Of course if one is in grizzly country, the typical ccw weapon is only going to be good for ending your own pain.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I do want to be able to carry when we are ten or twenty miles in the backcounty , there is no cell coverage and rangers are hours away. I want to be able to leave my 64 year old wife alone in the campground and not worry about her being a lone woman in a remote campsite (she has her CCW too, in fact she got it for when we are in the woods).

It's the two legged problems that we need to be able to carry to protect ourselves. However, as long as we talk about defending ourselves from the wildlife, I think we are shooting ourselves in the foot. That's going to hurt our cause, not help it.

We need to emphasize the criminal protection angle and the remoteness of the National Parks and National Recreation Areas.

local serial killer preyed on hikers

CITIZEN-TIMES.com: Suspect Gary Michael Hilton linked to John and Irene Bryant case

Here is a link to the local news story, this guy seems to have preyed on a number of hikers and the local tv news interviewed several people who said they will carry anyway.
