I don't ever want to have to pull the trigger, but I will if an when my life or the life of my family is put in danger. The ramifications even of a justified shooting alone are a deterant, but it is better then being dead or having to bury a loved one.

I thought the same thing myself

I never had any real thoughts or compulsions of murder. Speaking of people who think "that people are OK until they get a gun in their hands; then they become raving psychopaths." My neighbor (who's a corrections officer) saw my Glock on my coffee table. She was skiddish for a week thinking I was after her . Last week she had ex-boyfriend problems, so she asked me to spend the night at her apartment, she also asked me to bring my Glock. So... I Guess Im not a psychopath anymore.

Chris,

I'm often asked "You're a black belt! What do you need a gun for?"

My reply comes from a TV show called "Samo law" a very short lived show about the number one police, self defense insrtructor in all of Japan comes to America and gets carjacked by a gang of gun toting theives. The American cops just stare at him in stunned amazement that he didn't unleash a can of whoop@$$.

He sees their confusion and says "you can't break rocks with eggs"

I find that most peoples questions like this is largely due to fear or their own ignorance.

If a BG dies as the result of pointing a gun at me, then he has merely succumbed to an occupational hazard of being a thug

I don't have bloodlust, only a lust for life. There is nothing glamorous about violence or death.

Heaven Forbid that I ever have to pull the trigger, but God help anybody who threatens the lives of me or my family!

It is so refreshing to hear from such level headed people.
I am glad to know that none of us is eager to end the life of another. We can only pray that each of us gets our wish and never has to put our guns to use because somebody else has failed to make the right choices in life.

Most will answer this with what they believe they would or would not do, that depending on scenarios they have obviously given a lot of thought to, and prepared in their minds for.

I can speak from a little different perspective.

Along with pulling the trigger in 'Nam, I have also pulled the trigger here in the states while I was in law enforcement. In all cases, the bad guys died.

But also in all cases..... I lived. And that is the bottom line as to why we carry and why we train and prepare like we do. I firmly believe that those of us that carry have all, at one time or another, realized that the world can be a dangerous place. We did not learn that from watching Rambo or other similiar movies, we learned it as a result of life's ever changing experiences. With that in mind, we have all made a decision that if we or our loved ones are confronted with a life or death situation, we will do whatever is necessary to insure that we (and our loved ones) are able to go home at night.

It really is that simple.

Anyone who carries and does not believe that, should not, in my opinion, be armed with a dangerous weapon.

Does that mean that we 'want' to pull the trigger ? It never has been for me. That's like asking a paramedic if he 'wants' to push someone's guts back into their body cavity. No one in their right mind would 'want' to do something like that, but if confronted with the situation, their instincts and training should prevail.

A lot of the 'anti' people don't seem to live in the real world that I have and do. Their narrow viewpoints and opinions are defined by the often sheltered existence of their own lives.

When I was involved in that fatal shootout as a police officer, there was a lot of talk afterwards that if I had known the man better, he would still be alive, his wife would not be a widow and his daughter would not be fatherless. When that theme surfaced in the local newspaper, the reporter backed up his thoughts by bringing it to everyone's attention that even though I was an experienced police officer, I had not worked in that town too long. The reporter never bothered to talk with me. Had he made the effort, I would have had no problem telling him that the only thing I needed to know about the man was the sound of his 38 caliber bullet passing 1 inch from my left ear and exploding into the wall directly behind me during his pre-planned ambush.

It is not a case of 'want to'.

It's about survival, pure and simple.

It was about survival in 'Nam.

It was about survival when I was a police officer.

It's still about survival today and survival tomorrow now that I am retired, live a very happy life and mind my own business.

To butcher an old euphamism; As long as there are wolves about you need to have some sheep dogs around. Since I don't foresee the wolves disapearing anytime soon, I plan on being a sheep dog. A sheep dog doesn't go looking for wolves, he just makes sure they don't kill any of his sheep.

I dont wear my seatbelt in hopes of getting in a car accident. As a matter of fact, I hope I'm never in a situation that wearing my seatbelt makes any difference. But I still strap in every time I get in the truck. Even for the three minute trip to the closest gas station to get me a pack of smokes.

Its insurance. I know the odds are in my favor of not needing it. But, like a gun, a seatbelt is something that when you need it, you need it really bad.
