In Utah you can carry on any PUBLIC school campus. from grade school to a university. A private school has to have it posted at the front door that CCW are not permited. If it is not posted then you may carry it. from what I have learned BYU is the only school (because its private) that doesn't allow CCW or any weapons on campus.

It may not be against Utah state laws, but you will probably run into Federal law troubles here.

Can you link a source? I was under the impression that no carry zones were established state by state, and in some cases city ordinances. I was unaware of a Federal statute, other than federal buildings.

Thats what I was told. but I'd rather be safe than sorry.. My father teaches the CCW permit class here in Utah and he says there isn't a federal law on it....

I could be mistaken, but I'll check on it. Don't have time tonight, though. I'll dig up what I have.

OK, here's what I'm using. Please enlighten me if it has been changed or if it has sunseted:

http://www.gunlaws.com/Gun_Free_School_Zones_Act.pdf

Point 2(A) says you can't take a gun into a school zone (1000 feet from the grounds)

Point 2(B) are your exceptions, with 2(B)ii being your important exception.

CopperKnight, I am fairly positive that the Fed Gun Free School Act only applies to K-12, and as you already noted, does not apply to permit holders. Therefore it would depend on your state laws...sadly, I cannot carry indoors in a school. I can walk the campus, and go all the way to the door, I just can't go inside or go see the baseball game.

Be sure to check the text carefully. I won't interpret, but check the exception in question:
Quote:
If the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtain such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license
Are you "licensed" to do so if this state "allows" your out of state permit? I honestly don't know if that counts.

Do all states (like Alaska where you don't need the paper license) do a background check before issuing that license? If they don't, your permit may not be a valid exception. I don't know if all states do this.

Sounds like nitpicking, but we all know how attorneys look through the details to make their case.

BTW, the correct two-letter abbreviation for states is both letters are capitalized without any punctuation.
