You should only carry when:
1. You can reliably present the handgun, without any faults in under 2 seconds and hit a target at 10 yards in the COM, 2. You can keep the gun running, no matter what failure exhibits itself, 3. You have thought of alternate plans and other ways to extract yourself from almost any conceivable situation WITHOUT drawing and firing. 4. You have secured alternate 'less than lethal' solutions such as sprays. 5. You can respect the firearm for what it can be, not what it is. It can be a tool to save your life or another's, it is not a magic wand that will cure all evil by showing it or just having it with you. 6. You have answered the moral question of "Would you be ready and able take another human being's life to save your own or someone you love under the right conditions?" This is the most important question. Most people will say yes just to justify having the gun. It is an awesome responsibility to carry a firearm among our fellow Homo Sapiens, and should not be taken lightly. If you answer this one without thinking it though, you are doing yourself an injustice as well as your loved ones. You have to know what will happen during and after an event, and you must be prepared. This is not an easy choice that can be made with a statement, it has to be made with your heart and your actions. Above all, if you have not attended any training such as an NRA basic Pistol or Personal Protection class, do so. Attend training in defensive pistolcraft. Shoot in an IDPA or other action pistol/defensive pistol event. Just going to the range, firing a few boxes at a static target and pronouncing to yourself that you are ready to carry the thing in public is irresponsible. You have to learn how to use it, not just assume you can. Carrying a firearm without learning and experiencing the proper tools and mindset will do more harm than good. ---Just my 2 cents based on a lifetime of learning and my experiences in life and in training. I avoid the dangers I know about. I carry to protect myself and mine from the dangers that are not apparent. I started carrying the day I got the permit.
