I echo Bashful's comments. I took the 5 day Armed Citizen Corps course which is the 4 day defensive handgun and one day CCW class which includes a half day of advanced tactical training.

We stayed at the Best Western in Pahrump. Good accommodations. They offer a boxed lunch at their on site restaurant (Wulfy's).

My M&P9 was great and I did very well. I loved every moment of it and look forward to going back. As far as the steel target competition shooting on the third day goes the 45 did knock the plates down with more force, but it was a 9mm shooter that won in my group.

I read a comment about a Sig. I would suggest not taking a DA/SA weapon unless that is the one you carry every day and want to be proficient with.

I forgot to add that I went with another shooter and we took our spouses. We rented a 4 BR house in Pahrump for the time we were there and split the cost. It worked out to be less than a hotel cost and coming in to a 'home' like setting, complete with home cooked meals, BBQ and hot tub was just too nice to pass up.

The wife and I + friend and his wife all just returned from our Front Sight experience.

It was awesome! I'd heard all the hype (mostly from my friend who sold me one of his "extra" memberships) and now, after attending the 4-day defensive handgun course (and then staying an extra day for the 30-state CCW course (lecture, paperwork, figerprints, etc) plus some extra teactical skill shooting, I must say, I was very impressed with the quality of training.

If you look back at my earlier post, I was a bit apprehensive about bringing a 9mm Glock 19 to the class. It was unfounded. I ended up third in the shoot-off. I never had a problem dropping the steel plates (my problem was being a little too hasty on the hostage-taker shot in my final round).

Never had a problem remembering to "trip the trigger" for the malfunction drills, the Instructors/Range Master reminded us every time. (its to simulate the fact that with a type 2, type 3 or emergency relaod, the trigger had not reset and the symptom is a "dead trigger").

It was hot, no doubt. It is June, in the Navada desert. But the instructors were VERY good about reminding everybody to drink lots of water (provided on the range).

I ran with 3 15-round magazines. two in the holster, one in the gun, and a pocket full of ammo. Every chance you got, you made sure your mags were full. 1911 guys (or other similar single stack mags) might want more mags. They don't tell you to reload, its up to you to keep your gun running.

Summary: I can't wait to go back. The training and the instructors were awesome.

I think I'll have to try this or something similar when I'm no longer a broke college student (and before I'm a broke grad student... hmmm...).

Does anyone know how this compares with Gunsite in Northern AZ?

I so want to do this! Sound awesome and I agree with you. If we are going to take on the massive responsibility to carry a concealed firearm we should train properly for that privilege. All we, the law abiding citizens of the USA, needs is some guy who took a 2 hour course and started carrying to pull his gun in a manner that the anti-gun crowd deems questionable. All the credibility the NRA, forums like this and people like us have worked so hard to build will be shot down, no pun intended.

About 8 years ago, I discovered that I had a good chance of getting a CCW permit in my area. I'd been shooting (quite well) for about 30 years & owned multiple examples of every weapon type that is legal here. Did I run right out & apply for the CCW? No, I looked for training first.

I took the 4DDH class at Frontsight, operating out of Bakersfield (practically in my backyard) at the time. During the first morning's lecture (you'll be sitting there thinking "Man, are we *ever* going to get to SHOOT? Time is wasting!") I learned more then I thought there possibly could be to know- then we went out to the firing line :)

You can see your skills improving from firing drill to firing drill (they use two "relays" that alternate on the firing line. No, you don't get bored between relays, you barely have time to top off magazines & get a quick drink.). By the end of the second day, my skills had improved so much that I was literally shocked with my own performance.

After completing the course, I drank the Koolaide & it still tastes sweet :)

I was able to attend the 4DDH 4 or 5 times, Handgun Skill builder a couple of times, Advanced Handgun Tactics a couple times, Handgun Combat Master Prep once (man, that SMOKED!) as well as Practical Rifle & Tactical Shotgun (18 courses in all) before they moved to the facility in Nevada. I'd still be taking at least one course per month if it was the same hour's drive from home.

In every class that I attended (and later, instructed) there was a good mix of first time shooters, "experienced" shooters, LEO's and students who had attended other schools previously. ALL walked away very satisfied with their experience and the skills that they took with them.

Oh yeah, after they moved to Nevada, I took their Instructor Development class & started getting PAID to do what I love to do most :) After a year of instructing, I couldn't quite get my wife to give up her job & move to Pahrump and I had local obligations that made it a hardship to continue traveling and being away from home for 4-5 day weekends so I gave it up :(

Hmmmm, I guess that was my introduction here :)
