To me your response was 100% perfect. Finger off the trigger and by the trigger guard, saftey on. You were ready to use the firearm, but you applied all the appropriate safety behaviors.

Take a little pressure off and get a dog. Once you and he or she have settled in to one another you will know in an instant if the sound you hear needs to be checked out. Let the dog go first followed by you, the dog takes most of the risk and lets you have the upper hand.
In my case it stays holstered. I have a 19 yr old and 23 yr old coming and going all the time. The dog saves me the trouble of having to get out of a toasty comfy bed. Unless I hear that low hushed growl..

A little paranoid, but that may be the norm here.

I'd say your actions were appropriate for what happened. As for your son sneaking in and out you do what my dad did, kick his butt and explain why that is not allowed. Especially not in this day-n-age.

I am a big believer in situational awareness: if I hear something out of the ordinary or see something around here I check it out. I do not consider myself paranoid. IMHO, "surprises in these days of classroom/church shootings and Islamomaniacs are usually unpleasant.

So I try to avoid surprises.

sounds perfectly normal to me. I'm light sleeper and noises in the night wake me right up.
Had a wake up call on the 4th we came home from visiting the Inlaws
it was late and as we pulled up to the house my wife says the wrong lights are on in the house, slowly pulled in the drive and peaked though a couple of windows saw nothing and then the dog went off but he was in the garage not in his pen where he sleeps RED ALERT
pull my gun and open the garage door to release the dog into the house but he stayed with me, that's odd he does not like strangers and would normally bark his head off I open the door to the house and the alarm system was off.
Sent the dog in the house he ran to the back door to go outside to take care of bussiness really strange. I listen for a minute heard nothing and the cat came walking down the hall like he owns the place.
Now I want call 911 but hate to bother the police on the 4th of july they are busy with all the illegal firework shooters. Called the alarm company instead to inquire about the system status and any triggered sensors they said none had been triggered for several hours same time we left. so I start clearing each room found nothing call the wife to come in and then realized that our son was last one out of the house and he has been away at college for several months and has forgotten the routine we have a laugh and I really wish I had not quite smoking.
So no you sound normal to me.

At the risk of sounding contradicting to my thread on being a, "Pessimistic Optimist," I would say that you are a bit jumpy and need to tone it down. Now with that said, I WASN'T THEIR. I can Monday morning quarter back it all day long, but the fact is, it's your life and not mine. So do what you think is best. If you feel like their is a potential lethal force threat, and it is appropriate, then draw your weapon.

Now if you see a bad guy in front of you with a weapon then it would be nice to develop a condition response to draw your weapon, almost automatically. However that was not the case here.

I'm not concerned that you drew your weapon in either case. I am a bit concerned that there was not decision or thought process involved. You may be a little to quick to draw your weapon, but that doesn't mean disregard things that are potential threats. But again I wasn't their and I would rather see it in use early than you think to use it too late. I'm curious how much time you have spent drawing that gun? I'm going to guess a lot of time.
