SelfDefense:

There is one other huge difference in these cases. LongRider recognized his mistake, immediately took action to correct it - with complete disregard to his own reputation and potential liability, and then admitted publicly to his mistake.

By contrast, the LA cop immediately tries to apportion blame to the holster maker and the manufacturer of the firearm. Before it's all over he'll probably sue the manufacturer of his truck, his son's pediatrician and the management of his destination for creating an attractive nuisance. Not once will he say "I screwed up. Thank God I got the lead dope-smack and not my little boy."

LongRider has proven himself to be a standup guy. I wouldn't trust that cop to look after my pencil box.

That is one reason I don't like carrying my Kel-Tec P3AT. Sometimes I forget it is there. Guns should be comforting, not comfortable.

Glad you found it at home. What a horrible feeling that must have been.

I'm certainly not immune to forgetting things when leaving the house, especially when I leave early before having coffee.

No flames from me. I respect people who admit their mistakes. It's those who never admit to being wrong that I don't trust and can't stand to be around.

In the mid 70's I was working in a midwest PD and during the pre grave shift inspection the Shift Sgt looked between me and officer standing next to me and asked "where is your pistol" .

I paniced but it wasn't me. the other officer had left his pistol home on the table.

He was taken home to get it, in marked unit it wasn't the first time he had left things home., His shirt badge Etc. Shortly after that I knew it was time for me to go else where.

Ok, understand how you feel exactly. About the time I got really comfortable carrying, I left my sidearm in my house out in the open. I was in the process of putting stuff in my pocket etc. in preparation of leaving for the day. One of the kids came in the room and wanted me to go see something outside like now. So I did and totally left the gun sitting on the table. So after being in the yard with the kid for a bit I realized I didn't have the gun. Thought gee i must have left it inside (stupid me) and went after it only to not find it there. Then I really got wound up. So in the process of going crazy through the yard (thinking maybe I had lost in there afterall) and then back through the house. My wife comes along and says hey I moved your gun. Apparently she saw it sitting there and decided to put in out of site in a cabinet. Her reasoning was that it was probably loaded and shouldn't be just sitting out in case of company. Very reasonable and she cured me of being so cavalier.

Ouch. That was just plain rude Good one and no I don't have no stinkin badges

Thanks all for the positive posts. Thanks for the suggestions. I've been carrying since 1975 off and on. I've consistently carried since a motorcycle accident a few years back and my wife got me to admit I am not quiet as fit or quick as I was in the day. That is what got me I think that it is so natural and routine. I did have a routine that worked until the other day. At night I empty my pockets and place the XD in its spot on the dresser, every thing has its spot. I wear jeans most days and so don't change pants daily. My belt and holster stay on the pants the Mavericks belt slide is real tight and stays put. That may change now that I am using a Dakota Defender. As soon as my pants go on put wallet keys money knives in my pockets and holster the XD adjust if needed and I am off to start my day. Obviously a check list is in order thanks for the suggestion. There is one tacked to the back door for now

To answer some questions I did not call the police because doing so would have delayed my getting to the three stores I had been at the Grocery Store, a Fred Myers and the Bike Shop. Also what could they have done other than write a report? Had I not found it at home I would have reported it lost. I did get the local number for the police as 911 from home would not have gotten me the police in that town. I did call all three managers first thing the next morning and apologized for adding unnecessary stress to their day. They were all very cool about the whole deal. If any of them were antis they sure did not show it. Which did help alot because I really did not want to admit to anyone I may have lost my gun. It was no easier with the third one than it was the first one. But, that sick feeling I got when I saw those little boys playing in the grocery store really drove home that I had no choice but to do all I could to be sure that it was found before some kids got ahold of it. That more than my embarrassment will assure I don't repeat this mistake again. As I hope none of you do because it WILL ruin your day
