I agree, but certainly it is an option if you have no others.

One thing that I have done in the past with an aggressive dog that has looked like it was getting ready to come in and lunge is I have stomped the ground. It has served to make the dog think a little bit longer on its decision.

Other times, I have bent down some and greeted the dog and praised it for doing a good job of guarding its territory. That has worked to.

It really comes to making your best judgement about the dog at the time. It can be difficult since we don't speak the same languages.

in my case, the owner would be the one getting the beating from me once the dog was neutralized.

I was thinking the same thing. Kicking would be an invitation of sorts for the dog to play the game it wants to play with you. I'd say that standing one's ground works fine in most instances. Don't look into their eyes, but don't turn away. Your body language is going to be the best indicator to the dog that you don't wish to play the game. As far as pepper spray on dogs--please read this:
Pepper Spray to Repel Threatening Dogs? - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company!
Some dogs are bred for their aggressive traits and learning which breeds have that tendency would be to your benefit. Mutts or non-pure-breeds will carry a disposition according to how they are treated by their owners mainly. I'd hope nobody here would ever need to come to the point of shooting another owner's dog. You gotta do what you gotta do, and when the situation arises, you'll know. On the other hand--wild or non-harbored dogs, or those who run with a pack have a different mentality altogether. Use common sense--animals are animals and they don't think like humans do.

I am not going to be quick to shoot a dog. I am not intimidated by large dogs, and I feel confident enough to know when it would be time to go beyond pepper spray.
One's actions can either encourage or discourage a dog's instincts...i.e., running away, etc.
I know my neighborhood and do not fear for my physical well-being from any of the local canines, but if I did...it would be a phone call to the authorities to establish a paper trail prior to any action on my part.

That said, I know that 'real attacks' are possible. I think one can decipher an imminent attack by a deranged canine...then, and only then is it time for lead poisoning.

I remember watching a news clip of a cop thwarting a pit bull's attack of a young boy. The cop was able to distract the dog for a moment, but it was obvious that the dog was not going to back down...he shot the dog...end of story.

Shooting a dog in one's neighborhood is going to have some long-term effects for all concerned...be cautious in your actions. OMO

Stay armed...stay safe!

I've had to shoot a few dogs in the course of my duties, it isn't an easy task. Also, being a dog guy, I have a hard time with it that way too. I wish dogs were not a status symbols for those who shouldn't even have a goldfish for a pet.

Rabid... its awful hard to tell if its rabid or not. Most likely the raccoon had distemper.

One problem with letting a strange dog bite you before you shoot it or kick at it and it bites your leg,you don't know if that dog has rabies and even tho it might be somebodys dog it might just as easily be a stray,I get attacked by a fairly large dog I will yell and try to scare it first if the dog continues I will stop him with 230grains of lead,I live in Texas whether they walk on 2 legs or 4 if they attack I can defend

Defense...against a charging dog:

Take away its credit card. (I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist).

Nope. Most neighborhood dogs will stop short, especially if you make a move towards it. That said, when walking on the road I carry a switch knife, and when a dog starts barking, I get it ready. So far, all I've had to do is make a quick lunge step towards a dog, and yell "NO!".

Edit: But of course, if standing up to the dog doesn't work, then kick, spray, stab, punch, bite, or shoot away. Do what you gotta do to stay safe.
