I did the samething when a rotweiler came after my daughter and I. It amazing how your training, practice, reflexes take over in a situation like this. It even amazed me how fast the G23 came on point. The dog must have been gun shy because as soon as I drew my weapon he turned and ran. Glad it worked out well for you as well.
