Son-in-law has "scary" experience

The Mrs. and I are visiting our daughter and her husband this weekend. We spent some time this afternoon pulling the remainder of fenceposts which snapped off during a recent tornado.

This involved removing a fence panel back in the alley so we could pull a truck in there to pull the concrete-embedded posts out with a chain.

This evening, we made an abortive attempt to go see the movie The Dark Knight. Lines were just too long. When we returned to the house, we had to let the dogs out, but Justin and I went to tack up the fence panel first.

Once done, we had to walk down to the end of the alley and back around front to get back in the house. As we approached the end of the alley, a large dog suddenly began barking and charged us. I drew my Kahr PM40 from a Don Hume OWB holster under my shirt, pointed it at the dog, and shouted, "BACK!" The dog stopped short. I heard a metallic noise, and asked Justin if the dog was chained. He said it was. (His young eyes are better than my older ones) I reholstered, and we continued on our way.

Later, in the house, Justin said, "It's kind of SCARY how fast you got your gun out."

It's kind of scary how fast danger presents itself.

Fast is good.

It would be scarier if it took you longer

He needs to understand that two-leggers can come out of nowhere that fast, and most won't simply stop up short like that. Dogs will merely bite, generally worst case. BG's, however, will "feed." That's truly scary ... and worthy of the sort of response you executed.

Keep on him. He might get it, at some point.

I wouldn't feel too bad, Sarge.

I almost shot a goat that was tied to a tree while deer hunting.

I'm glad I didn't.

(I was doing the deer hunting...I don't know what the goat was doing)

Sergeant, that story reminds me of a truism that I learned a long time ago.

Young guys will bluster, old men will just kill you.

Is it possible to draw too fast?? The quicker I can get my weapon out, the quicker I can react.
