The simple fact is that SC's LE division is mostly hurting it's own folks...after all out of staters can still carry a loaded pistol secured in their vehicle and travel thru is at least protected by FOPA...Further, I am quite sure that fewer Floridians frequent SC than the reverse.
Even so, its clear that South Carolinians ought to demand their legislature deal with the obvious pattern of foot dragging, grudging compliance that SLED has engaged in. The activity of that agency is, to be kind about it, grossly unprofessional at best, and mimics the actions of a child not getting it's own way! Now, the SC reciprocity issue doesn't really affect me as I can carry there under 218 anyway, but it does stand as a good example of why law enforcement agencies must be held to account. It is probably one of the best examples of just why permitting/reciprocity matters ought to be conducted by other than law enforcement agencies. Its a little known fact that Florida's Department of Law Enforcement also attempted some rather draconian approaches when it was newly formed....among other issues it wanted exclusive control of certain firearms and promptly got it's hands slapped by our legislature..............I most strongly suggest you Carolinians demand the same be done there. |

Actually we have... but we lost. And oddly enough the version that passed was supported by some Pro Gun Pro Carry organizations in the mistaken belief it was "good enough" to pass something rather than nothing. And they turn out to be wrong. It divided the community just enough to mess the entire thing up. Sometimes doing nothing is better than doing something wrong.
I might also point out that for a short period the Governor considered not signing the bill that did pass. For the reason that he believes that "Permits" are unconstitutional in the first place. I almost wish he had of not signed the bill or, better yet, had vetoed it. So we could start fresh. There is a very large influx of Floridians lately into SC. Many are selling out and moving up to this part of SC (the Western part). Cheap land, no Hurricanes and escaping the soaring Home owners insurance while they can. This, of course, does not affect them because they are becoming residents. Or becoming property owners so they can get a Non resident permit if they like in that case. But we all now know that SLED doesn't intend to act in the manner we had hoped. So, at least now, when this is taken up by the legislature again, that myth will be off the table. I hope.

On a related note I talked with my local representative a while back (while they were still in session) about this bill and asked him about the Campus carry bill to allow CC on school campuses. He said that the bill on Capmus carry had gotten so screwed up from the original intent due to amendments being added that it became an issue that had not chance of passage. It started out as a bill to allow CC at schools and turned into a Vermont carry bill which in effect killed it.
He said that it would be reintroduced in the next session and had a good chance of passage as long as it did not get out of hand again. We all know waht we want and have an idea of what we should have but opinions vary and no compromise doesn't always work. The SC legislature isn't going to go for "Vermont Carry" so the best way to get a billed killed is to ask for too much. I am hopeful that Campus Carry can be passed next year as long and something doesn't screw it up before then. |

There hasn't been one single state added since passage of this bill... and, at best, looks like perhaps three or four might, some day, when they feel like it... be added. Same few that probably would have been added without this bill passing. Who knows what the future will be. But you cannot carry in every state. For one Georgia is out with this version. Would not have been out with the other version that did not pass. Perhaps your confused as to what and which bill passed? The correct one did not pass.

She's originally from NY, and the locals in SC refer to them as "half-backs", 'cause they're half-way back to where they started!
