For what its worth, i've learned dont trust anybody, and be aware of things that are happening around you.. so I agree there

I don't want anyone living around me to know what i have on me or in my house. There are a lot of shady characters in my "community"...some who i am in condition yellow when they are close to me. i also don't need trouble with cops...so close to my house. sadly, the punk kids that roam the street's don't always make for a peaceful time.

the other night i was walking when a group of teenage boys came around the bend. I am alone with my sissie dog so immediately went into condition orange. they were "homies" and i was not sure of their intentions. mind you, this is just a few blocks from my house. If they had ill intent, my size was probably the first que to stay away.

There are shady characters in your community and you want to get close to people you don't know in your neighborhood? Who knows? Your neighbors might be shady too. You just never know these days. It doesn't pay to get involved anymore, especially when it's gang related stuff. It's not worth the possibility of a drive by or getting attacked when least expected. You really can't blame people for that. A CCW doesn't guarantee anything either.

If you don't want people to know that you're carrying, you have to be careful how you conceal when you go on your walks.

no one knows i carry - i do conceal. I think it's only proper to be freindly with people..not come off as a jerk. My wife and are naturally friendly people...

Homie -- thuggish looking kids with huge pants and fancy hand shakes. I try not to stereotype too much, as it was indeed the style when I was in high school, but it's true, just visually, it looks like they're up to know good. Afterall, it's not people in business suits who are scribbling all over our buildings.

We live in a nicer than normal neighborhood, and sometimes it really feels like the good old days -- I don't have much credibility since I'm only 27, but I grew up in a small town with that community connection, and my wife's family is certainly living in less than desirable neighborhoods right now. So the difference is plain -- it really depends on where you live.

The point of the story? Carry ANYWHERE you are!

762 Which part of Vegas are you in. I am in the Southwest and I agree none of my neighbors are friendly. I will say hello and wave and I get no response. It is actually quite pitiful.

Homie...Like Zach and Holly (BTW very well said!!!) I too try not to stereotype...I was raised in Oakland, Ca (3yrs to 18yrs)and all I've ever seen was the HOOD...The difference with the hood in Oakland was it had all ethnic groups (not just African Americans)Caucasians, Latino and Asians...My point is you should be aware of your surroundings even if it was a group of Nuns (which are thought to be safe) hanging out...I'm sure the guys from Enron didn't look all that threatening driving their Astons Martin to work....My family and I now live in a very modest home and neighborhood in TX most families (requires two income households) and work abroad…so factoring in commute, economy , and family there isn’t a lot of time to socialize with surrounding neighbors so our HOA once a month has what we call ...get to know your neighbor block party…It works!!!

Good Luck to you....Besafe!!!

I think the people out here go out of the way not to say. You said it right 762 you have to approach, most of them avoid eye contact and act like saying hello is a bother.

Lightbulb Verbiage and abbreviations are funny critters....

The English language is a funny thing when it comes to abbreviations and verbiage. It's all a matter of experience and perception. I take one look at certain letters and the experience of my age and background automatically provides the necessary translation which is not always correct. For Example:

CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon), CHP (Concealed Handgun Permit) LTC (Lieutenant Colonel) [LT -- C] Ha!

I have to say...when we moved into our house 10 years ago a little old couple (both in their mid 80s) came to the door wit ha pie, a map showing the houses with names, and they were very nice. My next door neighbor was 98 when he moved out...to be next door to his new girlfriend after his wife passed. I'd get a report every day on who and what went on while I was at work.
Now...one house is a rental, the other one is owned by some very nice Kurds who are very private. Whay are polite, they wave, but I couldn't tell you their names to save my life.
I've got thugs two or 3 doors down, a (what I think) is a illegal bus depot in the back of us. They think I'm a cop due to the short hair cut and my cleaning of numerous ARs and pistols on the back patio. I go outside, they go inside.

It's better than where I grew up. I could count the gunshots every night, and it wasn't' out of the ordinary to find shell casings in the grass by the street. It WAS odd the one guy they found in the front yard (drive by with a baseball bat to the back of the head)
