I don't think that state sovereign issues apply. Congress has already passed a law that requires states to recognize permits held by retired police officers under certain conditions. So, if they can do that, they can do it for ordinary CCL permits.

This is an important issue from a practical standpoint. For example, I need to travel to MN from Texas. Unfortunately, I'm only good to go through Arkansas and Missouri/ Iowa is a no. I haven't checked but suspect MN is also No.

A national carry law would make good sense provided that the permit's broader utility be tied to it being issued by the actual state of residence of the traveler.

Will this happen? Doubtful. Immediately after the next election, and regardless of who wins, Congress will need to deal with very pressing huge issues which necessarily will take priority.

If something can be screwed up, the Federal Government will find a way. Most of us generally want LESS federal regulations and interference. A national concealed carry law would be a mess of exceptions and conditions.

Honestly i want the " feds " away from my ccw . Now i think if they have any grunt to bear it should be treated just like a state drivers licence . but hey it only took them 40 years or so to get the " interstate compact " lol .

As a libertarian I think we've got enough laws stomping our individual rights and I'd rather the government just stay out of my life... that said, the states not having automatic reciprocity is trampling my rights too... What's a guy to do?

Reconsider your libertarian stance.

Sounds like a great idea.

it sounds good to me, the only trick is getting it through congress before Bush leaves office.

Hey I'm a libertarian too. I'd prefer there to be more pro-rights laws than anti rights laws.

I like the thought, infact I had this discussion with someone last night. We were talking about how a river seperates parts of Ohio and KY and you cross that and your in another state, but can't carry your gun in OH. Its a ridiculous thing b/c parts of OH are pretty bad. My arguement was how stupid is it that people are issued a liscense in KY at 16. They are then allowed to operate a two ton weapon in OH or KY or any other state. Yet an individual who has passes a qualification with a gun can't carry it concealed. Yet at the same time, you have to think back to when the states were actually created. States are obviously regulated and grandfathered by a federal government, but allowed to make their own decisions by a state government. By denying them the choice to deny users to carry concealed weapons in their state, takes away that states government ability to regulate itself. I still think its BS, but at the same time, its why I'm allowed to hunt with a rifle in KY and OH people aren't. You have to give and take a little.

That's what passes for a Zinger? That's a shame, as it was neither insightful nor witty. Oh well, whatever. The point is that I don't believe the goverment should be regulating these types of things at all, but if they passed the law it might actually be beneficial to my rights - which is kind of a quandry.

Sure, if I decided to change my views to something more like SelfDefense's and I decided that I did want the government to legislate every part of my life it would negate the quandry... but at what cost?
